Pick up a diet book from a bookstore and you will quickly learn that you need to meet your daily protein needs in order to stay lean and fit for the long term. This is especially true if you are working out on a regular basis.
When you workout, you are wearing down your muscles. This is good if you are eating well because your muscles eventually grow stronger to cope with the additional stress that you are placing on your muscles. However, if you are not eating well, catabolism can take place and you start to lose lean muscle mass.
In the long run, your workouts become more harmful than beneficial!
To ensure that you stay trim and fit, you need to retain (and possibly grow) your lean muscle mass. You do that by making sure that your body gets the amount of proteins that it needs on a daily basis. Most experts recommend taking 1g of protein for every pound that you weigh. So if you weigh 190 pounds, you should be thinking about consuming 190 grams of protein during the course of the day.
Divide 190g by the number of meals that you take each day. Try to take smaller meals on a more frequent basis. If you cannot find time to eat for some reason (e.g. because of work), consume a nutritious protein shake.
Note that a protein shake is meant as a temporary solution. Don't start replacing all your meals with shakes. Your body needs other important nutrients and vitamins such as fiber, carbs and vitamins.
When replacing meals with shakes, add additional ingredients like fruits and yogurt to ensure that your body gets a more balanced meal.
